United we stand, Divided we fall

Do you believe if we are united we stand, or if we're divided we stand?

The Civil War proved how divided we were at the time. It defined us as a nation. I also believe, we are becoming divided again. With all the issues in the govt. between the two parties, romney and santorum bashing obama, news articles showing the political parties' animals fighting, and just plain chaos between the north and south, made me believe we are very divided once again. Like I said "United we stand, Divided we fall" We are a country of states that are united together to form an american country, and we need to stay that way. Think about it. =-)

Every generation thinks their problems are the worst that ever happened, but the country seems fairly normal to me today. Open political discussion is good. Attempts to stifle discussion with either laws or threats is bad, and is what starts to happen when things are really falling apart.

I wouldn't like to see everyone united again the way we were after 9/11, because it requires too much bullying and instilling of fear to force everyone to toe the line or be scared not to. I'm sure that living in a country of angry, potentially violent people wasn't any fun for American Muslims or anyone with the "wrong" physical appearance such as Sikhs, and we're still saddled with the remnants of that, including the Patriot Act.

So I'd rather see open disagreement and dialog, which superficially appears like division, rather than the deeply paranoid stifling of dissension that gives the appearance that everyone agrees.
