In the film Andersonsville an actor plays a Union sailor who is part of a group of treacherous camp bullies. They are all so obnoxious that I am surprised that they are not all played by English actors !

Anyway, the malevolent matelot's titfer has a white star embroidered across the whole of the flat crown of his cap, with a red central boss. A bit like the national insignia on pre-/very early WW2 US military aircraft.

I haven't been able to find any similar examples in any area of t'internet. All caps shown in uniform forums have a plain dark blue crown.

Can anybody throw some light on this please ?

Sailors had spare time while at sea. One of the things they did to pass time was to do personalized needlework and embroidery The common place for embroidery was their cap and their shirt. Cap with sun bursts or stars were rather common. A good source for this is Bluejackets 'Uniforms of the United State Navy in the Civil War period 1852-1865 by Ron Field. The book shows almost all Navy uniforms, arms, and equipment.

Thank you. I live and learn.
