I'm a bit unclear on how hospitals were organized after Letterman came on. I see Doctors referring to themselves as brigade surgeons but usually the hospitals are called division hospitals. Did the officers selected as the brigade surgeons work together at the Division hospital?

I ask this because At Petersburg Chamberlain's brother Tom is recorded as having brought the regiment's doctor, Abner Shaw to the division hospital to find Chamberlain. The brigade surgeon Morris Townsend appears in the story, but there is no mention of Tom bringing him. So I'm wondering was he already working at the division hospital?
