This is John W. Crosby of Company G, Pennsylvania 61st Regiment of Volunteers; he enlisted as a captain. He received a promotion to Field & Staff as a major on 4-22-1864. Wounded in action 7-12-1864 at Fort Stevens, DC, where he had an arm amputated. Still with the same unit, he was killed in action at Petersburg, Virginia on 4-22-1864.

Unknown, other than being a first lieutenant (shoulder strap insignia, nine-button frock coat, foot officer's sword) of infantry (cor de chasse or hunting horn insignia on cap). Excellent image!
