Although the current U.S. Army has 9 enlisted grades, E-1 to E-9, there are other ranks. For example Sergeant Major and Command Sergeant Major are both E-9s, but they wear different insignia. When considering world wide enlisted grades there are 17 grades of enlisted soldiers. How did this work during the Civil War?

Although there were several different insignia for Army enlisted men, I usually see it broken down in to just 7 grades. This is complicated because there was several special enlisted pay grades. For example a cavalry sergeant and cavalry company quartermaster sergeant were both the same grade but they wore different insignia.
