Union army Corps badges charts

Kearney, Butterfield and Hooker, 3 Union generals, are credited with their creation and styles mid war for the Union soldiers. Confederate corps insignia was not adopted in the same manner. There are however many images of confederate soldiers wearing Union belt plates and Union cap insignia

Without peer, "The Civil War Battle Flags of Union Army & Order of Battle." Is a beautifully reproduced volume.

This is an official document. As such, it is meticulously detailed.

For every corps there are facing pages that show the marker flags of the corps commander, sub commands like cavalry, divisions & battalions.

Accompanying the flags is a detailed order of battle. Included are commanders & operating areas.

For those of us interested in vexillology ( the study of flags ) also included are the flags used by the Department of the Cumberland / 14th Army Corps before the Butterfield system came west in 1863. In Chattanooga the obvious superiority of the A of the P marker system was recognized & adopted during Sherman's reorganization of his army group.

This large format book also includes plates of the flags of army commanders & badges such as the pontooniers that I have never seen anywhere else.

It really is something to easily look up individual brigades & their leaders so easily. In addition, as a visual learner, this book is like a box of visual candy.

Everyone should have this book in their Civil War collection… what my wife calls my piling system.
I just checked & online copies sell for $ 7.39 to $ 239.29… go figure that one.
