The whole battery would be wearing them, at least some of the time. It was the uniform jacket.

No other opinions on post #16? I can't explain differences in uniforms however it appears that the two soldiers have red piping on the sleeve but the one on the left has red piping down the front next to the buttons and the hat is different. Are they they same branch of service?

They're both wearing field artillery jackets. The trim just isn't visible on one, but it's the same coat. The army wasn't particular about headgear, especially in active campaigning. One man is wearing a forage cap, the other a slouch hat that may have begun as either an issue hat or a civilian purchase. Either way they're dressed pretty typically.

The goal of this uniform ID thread is to identify the two soldiers in photo #3 (two soldiers eating). Questions at the bottom.

So far from this forum the man in the badger hat (photo #8 below) is in the artillery due to red trim on the sleeve.

Unless I am grossly mistaken the soldier on the right in photo #3 and the soldier in photo #8 (badger hat) are the same soldier by face and by uniform.

So the questions are:
1 - Is the soldier on the left in photo #3 (Two soldiers eating) in the artillery?
2 - Is the man in photo #2 (Charles M Mills) the same as the soldier on the left in photo #3?
3 - Is the man shown in photo #4 (older James T Anson) the same as the soldier on the right in photo #3 (two soldiers eating) and #8 (badger hat)? This is the big question for names.

Thanks to anyone who can help by putting names to the two soldiers in the two soldiers eating photo (#3). I apologize if this is getting messy. There are several connections between the many photos.

That is a really great outdoor shot. What is the soldier on the right holding in his hand? He definitely has a strong resemblance to the soldier in photo #8.

It appears to me when I zoom in that it is a piece of bread. The soldier on the left seems to have a square cut piece of bread.

I think the soldier on the right and that in photo #8 are the same. My goal (and possibly wishful thinking) is to put the name James T Anson on both. Per comments here they are probably are artillery and which corresponds to family history but I want to be sure before I say definitely who it is or at least make educated leaps. I have even looked into facial recognition software but as algorithms are only as good as the programmer and that, from what I have read, the human eye is just as good or better, I have not tried it.

I'm not at all confident that 8 and 6 are the same man. See how 8 has a prominent, strong chin and 6's chin is very short - the distance from his bottom lip to the bottom of his chin seems much shorter that 8. Also the nose - see how 8's nose is well-defined and narrow, even down into the nostrils? And 6's nose is broad and flatter, especially at the nostrils, and without much definition to the bridge? A few features they both share: the squarish hairline; the somewhat wider than typical distance between the eyes; and the ear lobe tucked tightly to their jaw. If they aren't the same man, then I'm assuming they are kin?

I agree and thanks for the feedback. I think #8 and #6 are different men. I also think the man at right in # 3 and that in #8 are the same man. Now I think my chore will be to search all my photos for known and earlier photos of my relative (and hopefully not any kind of profile) to see if they match #3 and #8. Then I can put a name to them.

I agree on 8 and 6. eyebrow shape is identical! This thread is right up my alley, as I am still flummoxed with a solid ID on a pic of my own. Colorized for better ability to compare with other family hair/eye traits. This looks possibly like Sgt Infantry to me with cutaway coat. I don't think its my relative #3 who was guard duty at Rock Island Arsenal POW camp, different uniforms. Any suggestions, hints, clues that can be determined by folks with more experience please chime in! 2nd photo is Rock Island Arsenal to compare guard uniform jackets.

That sergeant is wearing a frock coat. You can see the skirts fall away on the outside of his legs.

It's been awhile since I posted. They opened the ocean so I went scuba diving and some much needed errands since the curfew was extended. I am still looking for intermediate photos in age between the Civil war era ones I have and those of my relative in much later years.
