I dug a version of the button seen below, last year at a house that J.E.B. Stuart and his staff visited in 1862. William Leigh held the button, and said that less than 40, if that have been know to have been dug. I have a few questions. Answer one, answer all, but I would like some answers!

1. I was just curious, everybody says it's a "staff officers" button, but just who wore it? What rank did you have to be in order to wear one of these?

2. Do you know of any surviving uniforms that are adorned with these?

3. This came off of one of J.E.B.'s staff, so who was on his staff? Did any of them wear these?

To bad this does not count for trivia points...maybe I'd get some participation that way...

This is indeed a CS Staff officers button for the rank of Major or above. As far as being able to say without a doubt it was from one of JEB's staff would be a stretch. I don't know if there is a existing uniform with these on it or not as they were a local made button and not an import or from a known CS button maker.

No, I can't say for sure, but It is possible...at least in my eyes lol! J.E.B. was there once, I know that for sure, but a local historian said that he was there three times during the war. It may have came from a Cav. Officer in his Corps (is that what they were? corps?) or it could have been left by a postwar vet. I can't find any info on the house to save my life though.
