Hello, I've had below shoulder length hair for a while and with Summer down the corner I'm planning on shortening, maybe permanently if I like it.

My question is if there are any sources out their that have details on the way Grant combed his hair, and what products he used? I really want to make my hair like his.

If there aren't I'm also going to see about Major General John Gibbon.

Thank you.

why not go for ambrose burnside? that'll be much more special

I think he may have used a popular hair product called Maccasar Oil. It was mostly coconut or palm oil with a scent - used to keep the hair flat. (It also brought about the quaint custom of furniture guards - lacy things for the back of the chair!)
That . . . or some Dapper Dan. :smoke:

I always thought Grant's neatly trimmed hair and beard were quite modern looking, unlike some of the elaborate coifs and whiskers of many of his contemporaries.

I've noticed a distinct difference in the hair styles of the Southerners and the Northerners. Both Grant and Sherman had very short hair - Grant kept it longer on the top, Sherman just about buzzed it! But the Southerners had it fuller at the bottom, quite a bit longer. That was so they could slick it up like Forrest in the above picture.

Not bad!

I think Forrest used Bay Rum - the shaving lotion and the hair cream - when he was fixing to do some serious gambling!

Forrest would be very nice, but that hairline isn't compatible! Maybe when I'm 40 :giggle:

Cavaliers vs Roundheads!

Love that top (sepia) photo. One of the best I've ever seen of him. Thank you for sharing it here.
