Ulcus - medical term for a local defect or excavation of the surface of an organ or tissue, produced by sloughing of necrotic inflammatory tissue.

Whatever it was, it kept this soldier out of service for 9 days and kept him out of the fight at Gettysburg. By the time he was returned to duty, his division was enroute to Gettysburg at Culpeper Courthouse.
