I'm not sure if it is urban legend or not....allegedly General Lee suffered from severe dysentery during the Pennsylvania campaign.

I have heard both. The heart trouble I take pretty much as fact. The intestinal gollywobbles.....mmmm, possible if General Lee was pigging out on cherries like his men were reported doing.

Capt. John F.S. Van Bokkelen was from a wealthy family in Wilmington, N.C.

He died of typhoid fever June 22, 1863 in a Richmond hospital.

He was only 22 years old.

I'm just reading Jeffry Wert's biography of JEB Stuart "Cavalryman of the Lost Cause" and he describes that JEB had suffered from typhoid fever as a boy. As a result he must have lost his hair because Wert gives a quote saying that months after he recovered from it he stated "even at this time my head is as bald as an eagle and I am very much laughed at by the gals."
Does anyone know if the loss of his hair was because of the disease or because of the measures taken to cure it?
