My first question that I can't seem to find an answer myself is why was the 49th Va with Mahone during the battle?

My second question would be, what do you think happened to Early and how did he become lost and not take part in the fight?

Early got his men tied up in some thick woods etc. and didn't get straightened out to get all his people on the field.
There may be other answers.

That battlefield is in good shape and still looks the same as 150 years ago.

Here is what sparked my questions....For one, it seems civil war trust maybe messed up because on one map they have different units for Early on the main battle map but the timeline map has them correct. The other is it is showing Mahone with the 49th who were actually in Early's brigade.

The brigade's principal commanders included Major General William Mahone (promoted to division level command) and Brig. General David A. Weisiger. The brigade was all Virginian. It consisted of the 6th, 12th, 16th, 41st, and 61st Virginia Infantry Regiments.

I have noticed the same thing on the map about Early. My G-Grand fought for the 52nd there and that Regiment is not listed with Early on the map but it is in his book.

Thanks! now I have a very good picture of what happened to Early's men. Talk about a FUBAR situation. That was pure chaos it seems all over.

You got that one right. It occurred to me, if you have any questions about the CWT maps, why not contact them and ask? If they make an error, they like to correct it (can't remember when, but I did get a map once that said "Throw away the previous map."). At the very least, they can explain what they intended. Looks like Ernie Mac found a logical explanation on this one, but those are nice folks and I would never hesitate to contact them.
