Gang,

On Wednesday, April 13, I will be the guest on Gerry Prokopiwicz's fine CivilWarTalk Radio program, from 7-8:00 PM EDT. I hope some of you will check it out.

Enjoyable interview, @Eric Wittenberg. I was delighted that Dirty Dan made an entrance there at the end! I had not remembered of the chain of events that further thrust Sickles into his doomed position. Pleasonton recalled Buford and sent him elsewhere? That plays into the Mead articles that I was reading that suggested that Pleasonton was not designed for the dual command of assisting Mead and running the Cavalry.

Where was the Cavlary? (Stuart) ALmost fell off the chair on that one: a total can of worms, indeed.

Videt: a new word for me.

I had heard the rumour of the Sharps rifles being present in the cavalry, but it was nice to have that rumour laid to rest once and for all.

I hope that you alert us in the future for any more interviews. Thank you for more information in the notebook

In fairness, I don't think anyone would have had the horsepower to command a corps and act as a staff officer to Meade. But Alfie definitely didn't.

The failure to timely send cavalry to replace Buford is soundly on Pleasanton's shoulders, and it had far-reaching implications.

I wasn't expecting that one. :-)

Vedette, actually. It can also be spelled vidette. I've seen it both ways. As I pointed out, it's a French word that means a mounted sentry placed in front of an army.

My ancient 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which has 204,000 miles on it, has a license plate that says VIDETTE. I can't tell you how many times I've been asked what that means over the years. :-)

About 65% of Buford's troopers had them at Gettysburg.

Will do!

I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I was trying to edit this before you could answer: I meant Spencer repeaters. As you write, they were outfitted with Sharps (sometimes fingers just don't connect to brain)

Vedette....like it!

I did enjoy -- especially because there was some overlap from last night's reading.

Rats. Missed it.
