I plan to continue the trivia game at least through the full six weeks of Game # 46. After that, a decision will have to be made as to whether or not to continue.

Here are the questions for Week 4 of Game # 46.

16. What claim to fame is held by John Huff of the 5th Michigan Cavalry?

17. What color flags were used to mark Confederate field hospital locations?

18. What Confederate fort at Drewry's Bluff kept Federal warships from coming up the James River and attacking Richmond?

19. Duckport Canal, Lake Providence, Yazoo Pass, and Steele's Bayou were all names of unsuccessful Union expeditions aimed at capturing what city?

20. (Two point question) Last Chance Gulch, the site of a gold discovery which helped to reinforce the Federal treasury in 1863, is located within the confines of what present-day Western state capital?

Answers to the questions for Week 4 will be due by 6 PM EDT Saturday, May 5.

Good luck!

16. He fired the shot that mortally wounded JEB Stuart

17. Red UNDER CONSIDERATION

18. Fort Darling

19. Vicksburg

20. Helena, Montana

16. He shot and killed J.E.B. Stuart

17. Red (This question was somewhat ambiguous as to the definition of a "field hospital", but I do have enough documentation to make the case between red or yellow.) UNDER CONSIDERATION

18. Fort Darling (Another ambiguous question. It might depend on who you ask. It is generally known as Fort Darling. Tho Fort Drewry might be an all too obvious answer, it was, in fact, called Fort Drewry by the Confederates:

"From the Richmond Whig, 8/1/1862, p. 2, c. 1

FORT DREWRY. – We wonder why the Yankees invariably refer to the fortification on James river, below Richmond, as "Fort Darling." The proper name is "Fort Drewry," so called in compliment to the commander of one of the artillery companies stationed at the bluff when the Yankee gunboats were repulsed. If the Yankees persist in "falsifying history" by giving the wrong name to a place which they have cause to remember, we trust the press of the Confederate States when they speak of the locality in question will give it its right name."

Contrary to the opinion of the Richmond Whig, however, it is the victors that get to write the history, and the Federals called it Fort Darling, as a 5 to 1 google response might indicate.)

19. Vicksburg

20. Helena, Montana

Clarification on question 20

In question 20, I am looking for the name of the city, not the name of the state, within whose confines lies the site of Last Chance Gulch.

If anyone has already posted an answer naming the state, you may enter another post with the name of the city.

16. Fired the shot that mortally wounded Jeb Stuart

17. A plain yellow flag

18. Fort Darling

19. Vicksburg

20. Helena Montana

16- 5th Michigan's Sgt Huff is credited with firing the shot that wounded Genl Jeb Stuart mortally at Yellow Tavern;

17- Hospital flag- yellow;

18- Drewry's bluff- Fort Darling;

19- Attempts to capture Vicksburg;

20- Last Chance Gulch- Helena, Montana.

The answers to the questions for Week 4:

16. Huff is credited with firing the shot that mortally wounded J.E.B. Stuart at the Battle of Yellow Tavern, May 11, 1864. Huff did not get to enjoy his distinction very long, as he himself was killed in action at Haw's Shop, VA, only about two weeks later.

17. My source said that Confederate field hospitals were marked by yellow flags, sometimes with a white H in the middle. I thought this seemed logical – I figured they would have wanted to choose a color that would be easily distinguishable from other flags in the area. I would particularly have thought that they would not have used red, since at a distance that would resemble the predominantly red Confederate Battle Flag. However, many of you answered red and SamGrant says he has a source to verify it, so as soon as Sam or anyone else comes forward with that source, I'll give credit to everyone who answered red. Of course, those who answered yellow will receive credit, since your source agrees with mine.

18. Fort Darling was on Drewry's Bluff.

19. All of these expeditions were designed to capture Vicksburg. They all bogged down in the Mississippi bayous between Feb. and April 1863

20. The site of Last Chance Gulch is located in Helena, MT. The question asked for the name of the state capital, not the state of which it is the capital.

I will hold off on posting the scoreboard until the uncertainty about question 17 is resolved.

A source has been provided backing the contention that hospital flags were red, so those who gave that answer will get credit for doing so.

The scores at the end of Week 4:

FIRST DIVISION

SamGrant 24
Sarladaise 24
ewc 18

SECOND DIVISION

Rad2duhbone53 24
Sockknitter 19
Texaswildcat 12

To start both used a 3 X 5 solid red flag. In 1863 (Jan) Union forces cahnde to a yellow flag with a green H and the yellow with green marker flags. The only Confederate hospital flag captured was solid red. I have seen it written that a Confederate hospital used the yellow flag with the green H but the only offical records I have seen say Confederate Hospitals were solid red. This has been discussed for years and I am sure it will be debated even after I'm long gone. If you find an offical document that disproves this please let me know.

Thanks

Did Confederate Field Hospitals use red or yellow flags to mark their locations?
