Here are the questions for the third week of Game # 34.

11. Though the Pickett-Pettigrew-Trimble charge is generally considered the climax of the Battle of Gettysburg, the final action of the day was a Union cavalry charge against Longstreet's right wing later on the afternoon of July 3. After what commander of the 1st Vermont Cavalry was this charge named?

12. William Norris headed the Confederate Army Signal Corps and what other Confederate bureau?

13. For what reason did Lt. Col. William H. Martin of the consolidated 1st and 15th Arkansas call a truce at the Battle of Kennesaw Mt. in 1864?

14. Not all Republicans favored Abraham Lincoln's candidacy for a second term in 1864. A group of Republican dissidents convened in Cleveland on 5/31/64 and nominated an alternative candidate. Whom did they nominate?

15. (Two point question) Immediately prior to his death in 1928, who was the last surviving Confederate general?

If you have not yet posted answers to the questions for Week 2, you still have a few minutes to do so. Those answers are due by 6 PM today, October 8.

Answers to the questions for Week 3 will be due by 6 PM on Saturday, October 15.

Good luck!

11. Elon J. Farnsworth

12. Secret Service

13. He called the truce so that wounded Union soldiers could be rescued from a fire that had broken out between the lines (and subsequently helped put out the fire, after which the battle was recommenced and Martin severely wounded). This action inspired a poem called "Where Crimson Quenced the Flames".

14. John C. Fremont

15. Felix Robertson (see CWT 12/03/01 !) (he had served as General in the field, but the Confederate Senate never confirmed his commission)

1. the commander of the 1st Vermont was Major William Wells, but the charge is named after General Farnsworth

2. Secret Service Bureau

3. So that Union troops can reclaim their wounded from being burned to death from a fire

4. Benjamin Harrison INCORRECT

5. Brig. Gen. John McCausland INCORRECT

11) Elon J. Farnsworth
12) Secret Service Bureau (Confederate spymaster)
13) Because a brush fire started and was headed toward the wounded Union soldiers on the field. He called the the men "Come and remove your wounded...."
14) John C. Fremont
15) Felix Robertson
RR

11. Elon J. Farnsworth (charge ordered by Judson "Killcavalry", of course).

12. Secret Service Bureau.

13. "Boys, this is butchery." The grass had caught fire and the Union wounded were in danger of being burned alive. He called for a cease fire so that they could be removed to safety. (Is the Department of Homeland Security providing you with a list of what I check out of the library? On Saturday morning I finished reading a biography of Patrick Cleburne which described the incident in detail).

14. John C. Fremont

15. Well, since he died on January 22, 1927, the answer can not be John McCausland, so it must be Felix H. Robertson who died on April 20, 1928. (This is another Clintonesque question as Robertson was never confirmed in his rank by the Confederate Senate, so was he really a brigadier general. De jure v. de facto. Since he is listed in Warner's Generals in Gray, I would agree that he really was a brigadier general.

11. Lt Col Addison Preston INCORRECT

12. Confederate Secret Service.

13. A fire had started and the woulded on the field were in danger of burningto death.

14. John C. Fremont

Here are the answers to the questions for Week 3:

11. The commander of the 1st Vermont Cavalry and the leader of the charge was Elon Farnsworth.

12. Norris headed the Confederate Secret Service Bureau.

13. Martin called the truce so that Union wounded lying between the lines could be moved out of the way of an advancing brush fire. (No, Robert B., they're not telling me what you're reading, but I'm glad to know your source corroborates mine.)

14. The dissidents nominated the same man who had been the Republican candidate in 1856, John C. Fremont. Fremont withdrew his candidacy in September and supported Lincoln.

15. The last surviving Confederate general was Felix Huston Robertson, who died 4/20/1928. Robertson, born in 1839, would have been a member of the West Point graduating class of June, 1861, but resigned prior to graduation to join the Confederacy.
