Hi everyone,

The Shiloh Discussion Group is having a day-long hike at Shiloh in November with historian and former park ranger Tim Smith. We'll be covering some rarely seen terrain as we re-trace the route of James Chalmers Confederate brigade on the battle's first day. You can read more about it, and sign up, at the link below.

On edit - this is indicated in the announcement, but I thought I should point out here as well that the cost for the hike is $30 per person, and includes lunch in the park. The fee is refundable up until the hike begins.....

You don't have to be a member of the board to join us on the hike. But you're always welcome to become a member. Any questions, feel free to post them here, or send me a private message. Thanks, and I hope to see some of you in November. Bring your hiking boots!

Sounds like an excellent way to spend a day and November will be a good time to tramp through the woods; especially if there has been the first frost or cold snap.

We've been pretty fortunate on the weather so far. This will be our third time going around the park with Tim in November, and the weather was good both times. The first year it was in the low 70's. Last year was overcast and a little breezy, but probably still in the 50's and low 60's most of the day. I'd be good with either of those results again. :)

I've been on both hikes and they were both excellent. Tim is a great guide. Make sure you're in shape for this years hike. Lots of ravines to climb up and down.

This is a lot steeper in person;

I so wish I could sign up for this hike.

My handle, the 7th Mississippi Infantry was in Chalmers' 2nd brigade at Shiloh.

I've tried to follow their route by car, but a personally led hike by Tim Smith would be the ultimate tour for me.

I've never met the gentleman, but have heard some great things about him.

I'm interested, if the date fits my schedule.

I went on a tour by NPS Ranger on the 150 Anniversary that was excellent. We followed Cleburne's brigade in the morning and then in the afternoon we traversed some of the steep terrain on the Confederate's far right flank.

I went on those same tours during the 150th. The two hikes with Tim the last two years have been great. A small group makes for a better tour. This year should be fun.

If I lived closer I would definitely go. Sounds like it would be a great time.

Tim is really good guy, and certainly knows his stuff on Shiloh. One of best things about our tours with him, and I think Mike will back me up on this, is that he takes the time to answer questions and actually talk with you, not at you. You can tell he enjoys being out there and talking Shiloh as much as we do.

Is this the same Tim Smith that wrote the book on the Battle of Champion Hill? If so, I really enjoyed that book.

Rick, yes, that's him. He's also written on the history of the park at Shiloh, a book on the first five national military parks, and most recently a book on the Corinth campaign. He has another book on Shiloh due out this fall I believe, with an emphasis on the battle's second day.

Do you happen to know if his book is going to be out in Kindle format or eBook format at some point? Didn't see it listed with that option on Amazon. Wasn't sure if you had a way to ask him.

Hi Rick,

Unfortunately it's not available on Kindle yet. I would imagine it will be at some point, although I honestly don't know. I'm not sure how that works, but I'll try to remember to ask him about it. I'd like to know myself. :)

Wish I had known about it,how was it?

Sorry you missed it popeyej, but the hike was excellent. Exhausting, but excellent. :) One of our members, Tony Willoughby, shot a video, and posted it on our site. Here's the link, below. And we'll be having another Tim Trek next November, so hopefully you can join us then. I'll post some information about here before then, but we should be looking at November 7th for the hike date. I'll update that when it's certain. Here's the link to those videos...

Does Dr. Smith still have his long, full, red beard? I have enjoyed chatting with Dr. Smith on several occasions when he was a ranger. That should have been a great walk and a good time.

Great pictures! And yes, Tim still has his beard, as you can see in the videos linked above. He was also sporting his Ole Miss affiliation. :)
