Jefferson County is the final resting place of two Civil War generals.
Union Brigadier General Joel Allen Dewey is buried at Hopewell in Dandridge. Confederate Brigadier General William Raine Peck's grave is at Westview in Jefferson City.
More than 500 – and possibly close to 1,300 – other veterans of the War Between the States also lie beneath Jefferson County soil. Three local researchers are trying to track them all down in time for the 150th anniversary of the war's end.
