Tracing Muskets back to units?

Probably a dumb question but is it possible to trace muskets, or civil war firearms in general, back to individual regiments? I know serial numbers weren't really a thing back then, but it would seem like there should be some issue records somewhere. Battlefield pickups throw a big wrench into this I know, but it would be awesome if a relic could be traced back to its unit. Thanks for your time!

Generally not, save for the rare instance a serial numbered weapon shows up in the lists of the Springfield Research Service.

Even those weapons that have been in the hands of Virginia families that can trace their roots back to the Roanoke Colony usually only have an oral history to support "this weapon was handed down from".

Carbines and pistols had serial # and even though its rare every now and then you will come across one that is listed in the SRS as ID to a unit.

You can often trace the model and type of musket issued to units - records don't show a particular musket. But they may show the model and type of musket.
I am not a researcher of this type of info.
But each regiment was supposed to report the type of firearms issued (I think quarterly), and there are other sources of info.

If you have an interest in a particular unit and post that request, I bet you will get some info here by other posters.

Some soldiers carved their name and unit into the butt stocks.

There are surviving firearms with rock solid provenance and chain of ownership tracing back to the soldier's that carried them.
