With Thanksgiving approaching, many of you may have heard that Abraham Lincoln started the tradition of pardoning the turkey. Actually, he did not pardon a turkey for Thanksgiving, but rather at the request of his son Tad. In 1863, the Lincolns received a live turkey for their Christmas feast, but Tad Lincoln quickly adopted it, naming it Jack. On Christmas Eve, Abraham had to give the bad news to Tad that Jack was to be killed. Tad was very upset and told his father, "I can't help it. He's a good turkey, and I don't want him killed." He argued with his father, and finally Lincoln relented, writing a pardon on a card and gave the turkey to his son. lc #LincolnHome #NPS #FindYourPark#TadLincoln #Thanksgiving #AbrahamLincoln #Turkey

Guess they had salt pork for Christmas dinner that year. :D

This is a great fact to know about for Thanksgiving Day. Thank you for sharing (even though I am a little late to the party commenting lol)
