To Easter and New Beginnings

Easter has always seemed a time of new life, new beginnings to me. March is Women's History Month, so I thought photos of some women whose lives had definite new beginnings with the freedom that the Civil War brought would be in order for Easter.

At a class on Literature and the Law, a professor from the University of Alabama noted that in the South, the most beautiful flowers were often in the yards of the South's poorest neighborhoods. I've noticed that many of the photos of former slaves from the WPA Slave Narratives have flowers or gardens in them and since I associate Easter with flowers, I thought to include some in this thread. (The photos are from my personal collection).

You might recognize this, it's Dorothea Lange's "Ex-Slave with a Long Memory." http://b0.us.is.pp.ru/s/staren/0/42110210JGl.jpg

You may not be so familiar with this view. http://indulgy.com/post/u1TGWkH2l2/dorothea-lange-exslave-alabama

Rebecca, Charlie, Rosa - former slave children from New Orleans

Love the children!

BTW, note the growth tucks in the skirt of the little girl on the right. I strongly suspect that the trim on the skirt of her older sister on the left is to cover the lines where former tucks were let out! Decorative and practical at the same time!

More, please! One of those threads, you get to the end and think oh no, I wasn't ready to leave the mood. What I would not have given for a few hours in company- there are always threads on ' Who would you most like to meet? ' from the era? I think someone with these eyes, that's who. Not to hear history, just hang around.
