A Union Volunteer with frock coat, pistols, a fighting knife, and white buff leather accoutrements. LOC.

It appears that this featured young soldier seemed determined to not limit his options in anticipation of close quarter fighting - the bayonet, two pistols and a combat knife.

Or was the display of such a wide array of handheld weaponry merely for show in the photograph.

Most photographers (in my opinion northern photographers) took photos of soldiers with weapons as props. Ive seen with 1-3 pistols, or 3 knifes as props. So they were probably just props.
