Here is a Union infantryman wearing what looks like a state issue jacket. It's also worth noting that John D. Billings wrote that "white bosomed" shirts were often worn in hospitals, and not common in camp. Soldier would have been made fun of if seen wearing white in camp. So it's possible the shirt was later replaced. Photo is courtesy of George Wilkinson.

Nor did the Confederate soldiers prefer white fancy "biled (boiled) shirts" as they called the fancy fashionable shirts, that required careful laundering...

John O. Casler of the Stonewall Brigade recalled the troops had come to camp with them, but soon sent them home...

A young soldier of the 9th Florida Volunteers joining Lees army for the first time in May, 1864 noted the hoots of derision by the "clay colored veterans" for wearing his white Sunday go to meeting toggery in the army...

Most likely a soldier from the 26th NY Infantry, who wore these infantry nine button shell jackets with epaulettes and frock like trim. They also had one or two belt loops in blue trim (visible behind the cap box).

East Tennessee- thanks for posting those enlistment docs. I don't know how I got the company designation wrong. Guess I'm gonna have to find the enlistment docs and check my facts. Thanks again.
