Today is the the first thread of a new weekly series I'll be doing on ACW photographs. Today's photo is from the LOC. A soldier of the 12th Illinois "First Scotch Regiment".

I have to admit: I´ve never seen a bonnet like that! Military or civilian? That´s a great picture of the Federal greatcoat, but I wonder why he chose it for the image. Unless maybe it was loaned from the photographer Was that a thing? Or maybe it was the only piece of uniform that had been issued yet?
The 12th Illinois was made up of Scotish volunteers, so it might have been part of his uniform or something he owned personally.

Either could be - it just looks strange to me. It doesn´t look like a glengarry cap. It´s shaped like a balmoral bonnet, but has a very narrow dicing around the bottom, and no toorie (the pom-pom on the top).
I love the colorization. It looks very natural.

I've seen loaner weapons for photographs. The 'Jeff Davis & the South with that huge d-guard bowie is a good example. Don't know about clothes.

Perhaps it was cold? Any hint as to what time of year this was made or am I just crazy for asking?
