Here is a photo of bank stock I found in Smith's papers. His father had purchased a few shares in a Winchester bank, the Bank of the Valley of Virginia. I contacted the Banking Commissioner's Office in Virginia only to discover I was not the owner of a bank. Seems the Bank was a victim of the war.

That is a shame - but a cool piece of family history nevertheless.

I can empathize a little because I might have been a trust-fund baby had my great grandfather not become a Baptist minister and, instead, gone into the family tobacco business with his brothers. Oh well.

Joseph Smith was a Presbyterian minister himself as was his father, David, and grandfather Joe, Sr. Cpt. Smith finished at Union Theological after the war and became a Presbyterian minister himself.

let's just put it this way the horses on the racetrack eight better than my family grandpa love the ponies to bad they didn't love him.
