Hello! I'm really only getting started with US Civil War research, so please forgive any newbie questions. I have a lot of experience with general family history research and access to Ancestry, FindMyPast, and more. I'm currently researching a Thomas Startin, born in Staffordshire, England about 1794. He was bricklayer or brick mason by trade, who appears to have settled in Knoxville, Tennessee at some time around 1850. He died there in 1871, and his body was shipped to be buried in New York (by his daughter Emma who had settled there in about 1848).
I have found a reference to Thomas Startin in a list of civil war letters held at the Knoxville Post Office, 18 July 1864. I'm wondering if there might be any more information about the letter(s), if from this Thomas or his son (also Thomas, born 1828, Staffordshire, England) and who might (not yet confirmed) have served with the New Jersey Volunteers, 8th regiment, company E. I would be grateful for any pointers or suggestions!

Hello and welcome to CivilWarTalk. I love those lists of "dead" letters. They do help pin down locations for people. Unfortunately there isn't much more to them. Many people had their mail held at the post office and periodically the post office would make a list of unclaimed letters. So all that list will tell you is that a letter was mailed to him in Knoxville and he didn't pick it up.

There are records for the Thomas Startin/Starlin who served in the 8th NJ at the New Jersey archives. You can request those for a small fee ($15) at this site -
