I booked a hotel in Waterford, Ireland tonight for a soccer game. I knew this town was the birthplace of the famous Civil War General but I wasn't aware that the hotel was on the site of his birthplace 😳.

I saw this memorial in Waterford and was so exited to see this memorial, just around the corner from an ancient monument. My husband was looking at me strangely and asked "Who?", so I had to explain and he was rolling his eyes , as if "We are in Ireland and the Civil War is here too?"

He is a big deal around here , the city's most famous son. I know he was a famous Irish patriot before the ACW but his time in America definitely adds to his fame. A lot of European countries had countrymen serve in the war. We seem to be one of the few that celebrate our men's service. It could be the fact that the USA means so much to this country that its more important to us.

Some bozo stole it from its display case and gave it to President Kennedy to give to Ireland on his visit there. Apparently there on display in a government building in Dublin.

It could be in Collins Barracks so . I just love that museum I'll definitely check it out in the near future.

They are on display in the parliament building in Dublin. I was only in the building once. I got an invite via family to an open day. It's more of a practical building than a piece of great architecture. I would have loved to see them colours though. I might need to write to one of my four local TD's (members of parliament) for a day pass . I'll start with the one I actually voted for 😃.

Edit: I cant see the colours on display in the online tour on the parliament's website.

There was campaign a few years ago to have the flag moved to the national museum. The flag was mentioned on a podcast by a local historian. I know the chap from my local soccer club , the next time I meet him in passing I'll ask him for more information on the flag.

Keep us updated my fellow Irishman (ok ok Irish American here!). Irish pride instilled in me by my Grandfather who fought in the Irish Civil War. Sadly he did not prevail, could not get his job back as a School Teacher. Fearing arrest an Uncle paid, snuck him into England, and onward to America. Have to laugh his US Naturalization Certificate states he's a British citizen but his Race is Irish!:bounce:

My greatfather fought in the Civil War aswell in the four courts garrison. He regretted taking part in later life apparently. He was only young when he fought in the War of Independence. I have a certificate of his service on my wall , unfortunately the medal is only a replica.

I got into a conversation with the journalist from podcast & a local historian on twitter regarding the flag. It's due to be put back on display in the parliament soon but due to concerns of damage that light has caused over the years it will be placed in a location that will be more beneficial to it's conservation.

I remember watching watching Kennedy present the flag on the news. if I'm not mistaken Kennedy had the sword of Commodore John Barry hanging on the wall in the oval office too.

There is a famous high end steakhouse near St Stephen's Green in Dublin. They have JFK's rocking chair on display. I must check the place out , although I just love my regular steakhouse in the city that I'm going to tonight.

I'm kinda surprised they do steak houses in Ireland. Sounds great to me. I believe the rocking chair was a Kennedy trademark. It was supposed to have something to do with making his back injuries less painful.

Enjoy you steak !

John
