Both regiments of Sharpshooters were positioned as skirmishers on the Union left on July 2. As the Confederates advanced across the Emmitsburg Road a detachment of the Second Sharpshooters commanded by Major Homer Stoughton fell back, some towards the Devil's Den area others towards Round Top. The portion that went towards Round Top was eventually forced back by Law's advancing troop and ran into the 20th Maine which was then taking position.

A number of the Sharpshooters took position with Company B, 20th Maine, on the far left of the regiment. Co. B and the Sharpshooters were cut off during the action and took position behind a stone wall down the hill from the remainder of the 20th Maine. From this position they were able to fire into the retreating Alabamans as the main portion of the 20th charged down the hill.
