I found this book today and was intrigued by the detail of Indian Brigade, but it goes into great detail about the recruitment of tribes in both the south and the north and the divide between tribes as well as the battle history of the Brigade.

Just started to read Chapter two, I love the way this book is written using the language of the time.
Chapter Two: Southern forces attack Hopoeithleyohola, great stuff.
Its also interesting to note that with the raising of Choctaw, Chickasaw along with Cherokee, Creeks and Seminoles, the Confederates had an estimated four to five thousand extra mounted troops for the intended invasion of Kansas.
I thought that perhaps the number of men provided by the respective nations would have been higher but I guess that loyalties between the various factions were divided. I'm still trying to work out how the various nations made their decision about which side to fight for, it couldn't just be down to the character of the men that recruited them could it? The book states that the Cherokee had 'Natural sympathies to the Union', is that true, I have always thought that perhaps the Cherokee just went with the best offer.
