Upstate starts at Hudson, ends on the north at Canada, on the west at Utica (born in Poughkeepsie, live near Albany)

Most of my family that are still in NY live within 30 miles of the St. Lawrence River. To me, the North Country is upstate and everything else is downstate.

So much debate about this! And then you get the people who think "the city" is only Manhattan. Or, if you really want a fight, start asking people west of Albany if it's soda or pop.

Being from Syracuse, I've always maintained Upstate is everywhere beyond commuter rail access to NYC. (AKA, north of Poughkeepsie.)

Also, the soda/pop debate starts in Rochester. Syracuse is firmly soda.
