I have two questions about the term "Buffalo Soldiers" 1. The term is most often used for post Civil War black soldiers whos served in the west, but when was the term "Buffalo Soldiers" first used? 2. Is the term "Buffalo Soldiers" considered offensive or a slur?

I do not believe that the term "Buffalo Soldiers" was used during the Civil War but was wondering if anyone knows when the term was first used. If the term is post Civil War I would not think people should use the term for black Civil War soldiers.

I have also read that the term was considered offensive. I do know some people today find the term offensive and say it is a slur. However, I am not sure the term has always been considered offensive. In the past I have seen the term used as a compliment. It is not a term I regularly use very often but should I eliminate it completely from my vocabulary?
