Many of us have gotten articles from journals and other publications at JSTOR. While looking for material at a university archive I stumbled across their link to their digital collections, which they host at JSTOR. It turns out that a number of universities are hosting collections at JSTOR, many of them freely available to researchers. I put in "Civil War" as a search term (because, of course I did) and came up with a long list of a wide variety of materials from all over the US. You can search by institution or subject matter. A subset of the collection is ARTSTOR which contains just images. I haven't spent a lot of time yet looking but it seems to be a promising addition to our list of sites.

I'm finding it a bit quirky to search. When I'm at the full collections page I get many fewer returns on keywords than I do when I do to the individual institution's page. I need to play with this some more. I do think there's a lot of good stuff here, if I can find it.

Another great feature is in "Advance Search". This allows you to search for 2 words that are near each other. For example, if you just search on "Civil War" and "Maine," you'll get articles that contain those words anywhere but, by using the proximity search, you've a far better chance of coming up with articles specific to the Civil War & Maine.

"Advance Search" also allows you to search for specific titles and for specific authors.
