My friend Scott Mingus and I have teamed up again, this time to write a two-volume, 900 page study of the thirty days leading up to the Battle of Gettysburg. It features 55 maps and 175 images of various types. The scope is to cover the invasion from the military, political, and civilian perspectives, and we even have some foreign press coverage of the invasion. The bibliography will be close to fifty pages in length, as we utilized about a thousand sources to write this.

We set out to update Wilbur S. Nye's great classic, Here Come the Rebels!, and our project took on a life of its own. We not only updated it, we greatly expanded its scope and breadth.

The title is "If We Are Striking for Pennsylvania": The Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of the Potomac March to Gettysburg. Volume 1 covers June 3-June 21, 1863. Volume 2, which is presently being edited, covers up through and including June 30, 1863. Signed copies of Volume 1 are available through my website, www.ericwittenberg.com.

Looking forward to reading it!

Wow! That's fantastic! Congratulations! I too look forward to reading it. If you don't mind me asking, how long does a project of this scope take? I'm assuming years.
Thank you!

This project is the result of a lifetime of study for both Scott and me, with both of us gathering information and sources over many years--darn near 30 for me.

I am reading this now as I posted in another thread, this is a spectacular work and is enthralling to read. The additional sources outside of the armies really adds to the narrative.

I am 80% through volume 1 and eagerly looking for volume 2 to come out.
Thank you, Jamie. I really appreciate the kind words, and I am really pleased to hear that you're enjoying it so much.

We are very much looking forward to hosting you on the CivilWarTalk Presents scheduled for Wednesday, September 28, 2022 at 8:30 pm EDT. Thank you so much for agreeing to do that! It's been way too long! Hope everyone will plan to join us.

Great job Eric, it's guaranteed to be a excellent book with your involvement and Mr Mingus. 😁

Pre-ordered my signed copy from Savas Beattie last week and can't wait for it to arrive! Eric, do you guys cover the actions at Aldie, Middleburg, and Upperville in any detail? I've read, and greatly enjoyed, O'Neill's book, but am hoping for a more contemporary interpretation.

Indeed we do, Alex.

Scott and I are getting together in person to sign books on Friday, so yours should ship within a few days of then. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the work.

I started on this project in 2012 at the request of another author and then shelved the project for a few years after I had written 40,000 words or so. I asked Eric to join the project three years ago or so. It took about a year and a half to get volume 1 into print.
