Priv. Heyward Emmell 7th NJ- Nov. 30, 1863- Cold. I suffer much for the need of a blanket. Expected to charge on rebels works this noon but the order was countermanded as the position the rebels hold can not be taken without a great sacrifice of life. It is awfully cold, you can see the rebels in front of us running up & down in front of their works wrapped in blankets to keep warm. To night we go back to our ambulances which are parked on the plank road.
Dec 1, 1863- Very, very cold. remain quiet until night and then march to Ely's Ford. It is so cold that officers have to get off their horses & walk to keep warm.
