“Remebrances of the Field of Battle” appeared in the Kalamazoo Gazette of Sept. 19, 1862. Marked as “written for the gazette,” it is in five parts, of which we quote:
You're on wonderful roll with camp pets, John! Thank you. A gopher is new! Poor things. Animals can die from sheer fright, you wonder how any of them survived battles.
