The First Indian Home Guards

This unit was formed here in Kansas, many of them recruited from refugee camps here in my county.

Opothleyohola lived in a refugee camp here on the old Sac and Fox reserve until his death near Quenemo, a town about 15 miles away from me.

There were three other Indian Home Guard units, although the 4th was later broken up. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd formed the Indian Brigade -- the only entirely-Native American grouping of units in the Union army.
