I did a search and didn't see that anyone else had mentioned this, so I thought I would.

David Cornwell started out as a private in the Illinois Infantry and finished up as a Major in the USCT. He fought at Shiloh and Milliken's Bend, and gives terrific 'on the ground' first-person accounts of the battles.

He also details the day-to-day lives of the soldiers with a great deal of insight and humor.

The book was published post-humously by his great-grandson. It's a terrific book - highly recommended.
