I have been doing some research on newspapers and correspondents during the Civil War. I have found a great site, "The Bohemian Brigade" at http://bohemianbrigade.com/alfred2.html

The website is "dedicated and in honor of Artists, Reporters, and Correspondents of the Civil War". There are articles on the greats like Alfred R. Waud, Thomas Nast, Theodore Davis, Charles Coffin, Jane Croly and others.

There are photos of many and photos of the Correspondents Monument built by George Alfred Towsend which is dedicated "to the Army Correspondents and Artists, 1861-1865". This monument is located in Garthland State Park, Maryland.

This is a wonderful site with so much information.

A book I recommend is "Bohemian Brigade Civil War Newsmen in Action" by Louis M. Starr. I got it several years ago at library sale. It is story of young reporters who covered the Civil War for Northern newspapers. The author, Louis Starr died in 1980. His book was reissued. He was an Associate Professor of the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University.

"Bohemian Brigade is the name given to themselves only half in jest by the reporters who left the taverns of the city for the battlefields of the South. In his book Starr relates in the words of the reporters how the nation first heard of the events of Fort Sumter, Bull Run, Shiloh, Gettysburg and Appomattox. He covers every aspect of the Bohemian Brigade from reporter struggles with the high brass, with censorship, with the terrible-tempered Secretary of War, Stanton, and, in the heat of journalistic competition, with each other."

The book has some great illustrations, including photographs.
