While we sometimes hear people say that the 14th Amendment was only intended to protect freed slaves, the debates in the spring of 1866 say differently. My new article on the 14th Amendment and Immigrants looks at what was actually said about immigrants and the children of immigrants in the contentious debate over this important amendment.
