I'm new to the Civil War and as part of some geneology research I'm trying to find out what era and regiment this soldier might be part of?

Welcome @Gillogue !

As others have said, your image is most definitely post Civil War.
While far from an expert, I would not discount the possibility this photo might even from be the 1900 -1905 era.

But I'm sure our experts will correct me.

Once again, welcome to the forum.

Welcome.

After scrolling through some post CW uniform images, it looks very similar to a full uniform worn by a US cavalry soldier during the Indian wars, circa 1870s. Am no expert on uniforms, though.

A clearer view of the insignia on the kepi might reveal definite clues as to his unit identification.

Post Civil War. Post 1873. If we had the trousers to look at a better guess could be made.
