The cavalry units didn't play a big role in the Battle of Galveston, but they did do important scouting work. Their rendezvous on the night of December 31, 1862 was Schmidt's Garden, a bier haus near the beach between 20th and 21st Streets, directly behind the present-day Galvez Hotel.

Schmidt's Garden in 1871:

Fun fact: In 1867, during a severe yellow fever epidemic, the Schmidts had a baby boy. The child survived, and was named Quarantine Schmidt.

Schmidt's Garden was much more than a bier haus. There were various amusements (ten pin, swings, a band shell) in addition to the bar.
The Confederate cavalry routinely rendezvoused there in the night, when the Yankees returned their ships. This may well be why F.W. Schmidt got a cannon ball in his yard.
His oldest son, Christopher, eventually joined the local Confederate unit (he was initially refused based on age). Son Quarantine Bennett Schmidt also named one of his sons with that family moniker, so there was a second Quarantine Schmidt. -F.W. was my g-g-g grandfather.
