NF Tent set-up

I am reading a Union soldier's CW diary compilation, and it makes a brief reference to erecting a tent for himself and comrades over a two foot deep dug-out hole, I believe, in Maryland, December 1862(?) Besides some protection from enemy fire, could the earth have actually been a little warmer at that depth?
