Tent patching

I'm embarrassed to admit that I bought a tent and didn't look at the canvas. When I asked the gal about size she said it was standard size, which I took to be 6x9..um no, this Is a 6x6 and if they only used it once, or so they claimed…I'd like to have a word with them about proper care of your canvas. It has a rip and a hole, which I will need to repair and patch. The hole looks like someone drove a tent peg into the wrong area..again..not just used once..I don't mind salty..but to sell canvas and poles with dry rot..my fault for not requesting actual measuremtns and pics…*sigh* just wanted to get a tent for my son so we can return borrowed items to our battery..

So, the hole is too big to do a mend on..it will need a real patch. the rip, I can sew and then patch. Both canvas problems are toward the bottom of the tent. Canvas is super heavy, with extra fabric reenforcements at the 4 corners..it WAS an expensive tent.

Suggestions for the proper patches to use? I'd like a glue on if possible..the hole is at least nickle sized..if not a bit bigger. I can do a "weave" with heavy thread to cover and secure the edges of the hole..but I want something to make a quality repair with..otherwise I'll look at it and cringe..you know??

While I'm old school and would probably sew it on and apply wax, rubber cement is probably the glue you are looking for. It is tough, waterproof and flexible. Hot glue is also an alternative, but it is MUCH less resistant to cracking when bent.

I am on Lake Erie…sew yes, we haz marinas! Lol!
It's a pretty simple repair, I know you could easily do it if you get your hands on a remnant of the right material. I am FAR from a talented sewer and I've made a few tent patches over the years that held up just fine. From someone who has been in the boating business literally since in diapers, any marine related repair unless you really know the person doing it costs lots of $$. That said though if there's a canvas shop nearby maybe you could pick up a remnant for cheap or maybe they'll give you a piece. I had to patch my shelter half last year and called the guys who made it and they were nice enough to mail me a remnant for no charge.

I need to call around locally. If that fails I can always aks the folks I bought my tent from. I'm sure they have remnants
