Not a new custom back then, But the catching of tears in a bottle was wide spread during the civil war. The women would catch their tears to save for their loved one, to show how much they were missed. If their loved one died they would empty their tears on there grave.If there was no grave the bottle was saved along side pictures and Items of the departed. These bottles are still made today.

no, I had a chance 20 years ago to buy one and I thought the guy was pulling my leg about what it was, it was from the 1800s and I still kick my self , but I didnt have a comp. back then to check it out. AHHH
