sword cleaning advice needed

What would the experts recommend on cleaning this sword? The black on the handle can be scratched off with finger nail.Would like to clean for display but not hurt the value.

IMHO you should never clean an antique. The sword looks like it would display well as it is and removing any of the patina will hurt the value of it.
 
If you want to decrease the value clean it:D LEAVE IT ALONE
 
In a word, "DON'T". My very first purchased acquisition, many moons ago, was the same sword, though an Emerson & Silver; I couldn't wait to get it home and apply Brasso! Boy did I get that thing to shine! I then showed it to Dave Taylor and in Dave's very dry way he said, "man that's nice, you just wiped away 50% of the value." Lesson learned...……...
 
You should maintain the blade by applying a thin layer of oil... especially if there is a risk that people will touch the blade with sweaty fingers... or it will rust over time.
