Hello All,
I found this thread a little while ago I collect some Confederate relics I just wanted to share my favorite piece it is Very rare you will probably never see another except in books If you guys are familiar with the Confederate Belt Buckles and Plates book by Steve Mullinax Expanded addition this is Plate 052 (Not to be mistaken with plate 053) Notice the irregular ring of stars there is like a few of these in existence it is less common than plate 053 and by less common I am talking by like 2 LOL! I have had this in my collection for about 20 years it was found on Private property a ways away from the Chatanooga Battlefield by the property owner in the 1940's when he was clearing some of his land! I have the paperwork for it I thought that you guys would like to see it because chances are you wont see another one the few there are are in private collections the plate 053 I believe there is one in the Confederate Museum and Hanover Brass makes a reproduction! The last one of these I knew of sold at an auction for 35K 2 years ago. it's a cool piece I am going to sell it sometime as it belongs with a collector that still goes to shows and such so other people can enjoy it! These are believed to be made by Memphis Novelty Works (Leech and rigdon) These are not the best pictures in the world but look at the abnormal stars sollowing the top right of the S those stars are touching and there are some bizare other stars on the ring I love the Patina thats one of the cool things about these Confederate buckles that have spent some time in the ground I have seen the same buckle found in 2 different areas around the same time have such different Patina A lot of it has to do with different minerals in different soils and of course the Confederate brass didn't have all the alloys of other brass as there were shortages in the south of basically everything!
