Did Union or CSA substitutes use their own name or the name of the substitute when enlisting? Case in point Thomas J. Gantt (1844-1936) from Charleston enlisted in the 7th SC Cavalry, Holcombe Legion, on Feb 6, 1864, at Ft Sumter using the name "T. J. Hughbanks." He was captured Apr 28, 1864, and volunteered for the Union Army on May 9, 1864, serving in the 1st US Volunteers, using his real name. His Union records and pension applications make reference to these two names. Any reason for doing this?
