Stumped; Need Assistance

So I scan the homestead record for the guy in Sidney thinking that dude was from the 110 Ohio and buried in Colorado, like you linked to.

But noooo.....this John T Dunning is from the 89th New York!!!

The 89th??......Which grave is that??.....I am lost, now!

Is there another Homestead file for the other John T.? The discharge certif. you want may be there.
What about pension files? They might reference Homestead grants.

Strikeout on all three John T Dunnings in the pension file department. At least on Fold3.

No kidding. No listing on FindaGrave for this one.

I'm so turned around at this point not sure what to do. My students are suppose to research these veterans and submit the info to the community so they had it readily available. But I want to make sure the info is accurate but I haven't came across something messed up like this.

Maybe the 17th Michigan John T Dunning (who was listed as MIA in 1864) actually deserted and had no discharge? So he requested a discharge certificate in order to qualify for homestead and, as fate would have it, there happened to be another John T Dunning? He was sent the discharge certificate for John T Dunning (110th Ohio) which he used for homestead?

Ha...but no. I am positive they are different people.

I do think @Albert Sailhorst was on to something with the headstone that completely passed me. I now have found info J T Dunning died in Lockwood, Missouri. Although....the info says he was buried back in Nebraska.
