Guys, I wanted to share this info with you just an observation of what, I noticed. I went to UNLV library which is 6 stories tall. The only other University is Reno for the state of Nevada. I checked out John Bell Hood's Advance and Retreat 1959 edition on the due date taped in front cover it was checked out 1966 (3 times in the 70's) once in 85 then me in 2009. I also checked out Brandy Station Virginia June 9, 1863 by Mckinney 2006 edition, I am the only one to check this out. Brigadier General John D. Imboden by Tucker 2003 only one to check it out and The Jones-Imboden Raid by Collins 2007 only one also again. My point is no students or general public (who's allowed to check them out too) reads books its all internet. I think its sad. They have a nice selction easy over 200 civil war books. I guess pre-computer days it was libraries not anymore.

My college had a massive book collection. Rows and rows and rows just on the ACW. Every topic imaginable was in there. And I experienced the same thing you did Gist; you pull out a book and it hasn't been checked out for like 20 years!

I frequently purchase used books thru Amazon dealers that turn out to be library rejects. Some of them still have the cards showing no activity in 40 or 50 years. Most recent was a biography on William Richardson Davies.

Excellent library. I spent quite a few hours in the Lied Library a few years back. I love their retrieval system for the older journals.

Its not just the CW books, I read alot of ww2 books and In my Library at the University of MN, most all of the ww2 books havent been opened in forever, the civil war books, well i think im the first person who has craked them open in 20 plus years, oh well nothing beats breathing in that 30 year old dust, I recall on book i requsted in from our twin cities campus that was published in 1880, the last time it was checked out was in the 1920's!

A couple of comments --

I tell anyone who's not tired of listening to me that the Internet is a suspect source, at best a good starting place and at worst a pit of misinformation. (I know I'm preaching to the choir here.) Nothing beats a well-researched and well-written book from a reputable publisher. My bedroom, living room, office, and garage full of books will attest to this. Can't wait until my son moves out so I can unpack the books in the garage and make his room a library!

As to library discards, it's a sad truth that libraries have a finite amount of space. For every copy of the latest from Dan Brown that comes in, a less than active book must be discarded. I've bought some of my treasures from a library in Maine which sells its discards on Ebay.

Don't even get me started on the retention of medical records!
