Strange Case Shot Ball

Grape shot consisted of two iron plates with iron balls between them and held together with a long bolt.

And I was only commenting that the impression in the shot looked as it could have been caused by the Bolt — if this had been part of a grape shot.

Grape shot consisted of two iron plates with iron balls between them and held together with a long bolt. they also had two iron rings around the stand to hold the balls in. Canister consisted of a tin can attached to a wooden sabot with two iron plates (one top and one bottom) with iron or lead balls inside the can with sawdust packed in around them. 12# field gun canister on left and 12# Grapeshot on right.View attachment 432911

I found the top to a canister plate to a 6 pounder that was fired from Vaiden's Mississippi Battery during the siege of Vicksburg. I'm going to post it up this week.

It's thinner than the bottom plate would've been. It's not very thick
