Straight Shield v. Curved Shield

Two examples are posted here from my collection. Both are M1863 hammers. One has a curved shield which I believe is typical of the Springfield pattern. The other is a straight shield which is not a typical Springfield pattern. Oddly enough the one with the pattern shield has a C on it and the non conforming one has no inspector stamps. Is anyone here familiar enough with shields to be able to tell who made the hammer with the straight shield?

I'm not entirely sure if I understand correctly what you mean by a "straight shield," but I am assuming you mean the top part of the outline that doesn't appear to be as strongly curved on the first one?

If so, I may have your answer. I was in Gettysburg anyway so I stopped by the Horse Soldier to see if they had something in stock that appeared to match. Here is an S.N & W.T.C. for Massachusetts that has a shield that doesn't look to me like it has as much of a curve on top as a typical Springfield hammer.

His is curved. There are others that have straight sides.
